 Forklift Steering Axle

Steering Axles house the wheels and is the assembly in charge of guiding the wheel towards the direction where the operator wants to turn into. Forklifts use pinion and rack steering designs, where the steer wheel rotates and controls the pinion gear. Then, the pinion gear’s motion is transferred to the rack that ultimately converts into linear motion. The Steering Axle Assembly’s Rack and pinion mechanism allows the steering wheel to have a direct steering feel due to the large force of feedback from the steering assembly.

In regular assemblies, bushings and bearing are located in the mounting section where the axle is situated.  Alternatively, forklift steering axles are connected to hydraulic cylinders which are connected by vertical hinge, making the wheels rotate. In this set-up, a bearing or sometimes a bushing is inside the wheel to allow the gear to rotate. Also, the steer axle uses needle bearings that roll inside the steering knuckle, which in turn reduces friction and increase tolerance; resulting in increased durability. The use of friction reducing bearings have also eliminated the common steering faults, providing optimal steering feedback.

More advanced forklift and trucks are now equipped with collapsible steering column that absorbs frontal energy and impact. Also, newer models are now equipped with better rib design that have reduced weight while also focusing on high durability and improved alignment.
