Almost all wheeled vehicles use some sort of braking system. Among all, Disc brakes and Drum brakes are widely used. The system, which uses a rotating disc, is known as disc brake. Rotating drum base braking system is called as drum brakes. Both systems usually installed in a caterpillar forklift to ensure better safety. Drum brakes are often used in rear or primary wheel as most of the pressure and heat produced in the front wheel. Disc brakes are installed in front wheel, so that the vehicle doesn’t slip away while brake is applied.

The shape of the brake drum looks similar to a drum, which is why it is named after. A pair of welded curved plate inside the drum is known as brake shoe. This thing plays a key part to stop the wheeler.

The interesting fact of drum type brake is that, it has an emergency braking option which can stop the forklift engine even if there is a total brake failure. A lever is mounted in the break, which is directly connected with the brake shoe. It can bypass the wheel cylinder to control the break directly.

The advantage of caterpillar drum brakes is its less expense, better corrosion resistance, lighter in weight.

As the braking shoe is continuously fractioned with the wheel, it gets corroded with time. If repair is not possible, then there is no way without changing the whole drum.
