The master cylinder is a hydraulic pump. A reservoir of brake oil placed right above the brake master cylinder provides optimized quantity of oil to the master cylinder, enabling it to apply the requisite pressure to the braking system. As you pump the pedal, it forces the fluid into the calipers/wheel cylinders (or clutch bearing for a clutch master cylinder). This works really well because fluid does not compress. Air, however, compresses quite easily, so any air in the braking system will reduce the hydraulic pressure by large amounts.
Inside the Toyota Forklift Master Cylinder is a machined bore that contains the master cylinder primary and secondary pistons. Both pistons are combined into a single, two part unit. The section that is closest to the brake push rod is the primary piston, while the section closest to the front of the master cylinder is the secondary piston. Cup seals are placed on the primary and secondary pistons to provide a tight seal in the automobile master cylinder bore. Calibrated springs are placed between the primary and secondary piston and the secondary piston and the end of the master cylinder bore. The area in front of each piston is the pressure chamber area and this is where pressure is created to operate the brake system. When the operator place his foot on the pedal rapped brake fluid and hydraulic pressure builds up as the piston cup is engaged. The calipers or wheel cylinders are forced to stop the wheels from rotating by a built up hydraulic pressure. Once the pedals are released, the brake fluids stream back into the master cylinder reservoir.
